Start the WebCenter Suite domain

Each domain has an adminServer which need to be started before we can start the managed servers.

This can be done by executing the startWebLogic.cmd command in following directory:
<middleware home>\user_projects\domains\webcenter_domain\bin

The admin server will now start. Be patient, this can take a few minutes depending on your system.

The server has been started when you see following line:
<WebLogicServer> <BEA-000360> <Server started in RUNNING mode>

You can open the console:
http://localhost:7001/console

When you have been logged in to the console you can take a look at your environment by opening the servers page from the environment section:

There you can see the managed server that you need to start:

  • WC_Collaboration: contains the WebCenter services
  • WC_Portlet: used for deploying portlets
  • WC_Spaces: this is the WebCenter Spaces server
  • WC_Utilities: Analytics and activity graph is installed on this one.

The beauty of this is that you only need to start the servers you want. For example, if you don't want to use the analytics or discussions, you just can start the spaces server. This is what we will do now.

You can't start the servers from the console unless you have installed the node manager but we haven't done so.

The basic command for starting a managed server is the following:
startManagedWebLogic.cmd <managedServer> <WebLogic HTTP address>

For example in order to start the spaces server we need to execute following command:
startManagedWebLogic.cmd WC_Spaces http://localhost:7001

When you execute this command, some initializations will take place and after that you will need to provide the username and password of the admin user you defined during install.

When you start the server you might see an error that looks like this:

Although the server will be started, the WebCenter application will not work.

In order to solve this, you only need to recompile the packages from the DEV_MDS schema. If you don't know how to do this, this can be done in JDeveloper. First create a connection to the DEV_MDS schema.
Make sure you also compile the package body and not only the specifications!

Shutdown the managed server first and rerun the command to start the managed server.
Now you should see the server in running mode without seeing any error message.

Test the spaces application by going to http://localhost:8888/webcenter

When you see the default welcome page, your server works!

Happy developing!

You now can start playing with WebCenter Spaces and the services. There is however something missing if you want to make use of all the features. For the document servers, you will need UCM. I did not include the steps to install UCM because it is a seperate product.
I will write a similar post on how to install and configure UCM so you can use it in your Spaces Environment.

If there is something missing in the description or you have doubts, please leave a comment so i can update the howto.

Comments

As a side note you may want include that UCM has to be installed Separately and configured, so that you spaces instance can start leveraging the UCM content

You are right. UCM is however, not mandatory. I will add a note so people know they need to install it speperatly.
I will write a similar post on how to extend the WebCenter domain by adding UCM and how to configure it so it can be used in Spaces.

Excellent explanation. Kindly also include UCM integration step with WebCenter.

Compiling the mds_internal_shredded package body throws the below error :
Error(1): PLS-00753: malformed or corrupted wrapped unit

Any Idea ?

I described this in this very page...
You need to recompile the packages from the MDS schema.

I cannot see the Services Tab in the Webcenter spaces Administration, How can I get Discussions and Announcements?
WC_Collaboration is started successfully and in Running Mode.

can you post this in the WebCenter Spaces forum on OTN so other people can also help or find the thread: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=1188
I will respond there to your question.

Really Really helpful information. Thanks a ton !! Thanks a lot. But if i have any queries while developing , can i post in this forum only ?

Hope, these tutor is enough to complete my desire to learn the webcenter configurastion and istallation.

If any thing adds pl keep it update so, it will be helpful for us a lot.

Thanks a lot......Poster

Hi sir,

Iam successfully done till this part but iam confused with the below part pl help me.

"In order to solve this, you only need to recompile the packages from the DEV_MDS schema. If you don't know how to do this, this can be done in JDeveloper. First create a connection to the DEV_MDS schema.

As i already prescribed I have no Installation of JDeveloper....so where can I recompile the package.

Download JDeveloper. You will need it anyway to develop portals.

Sir,

I have already down loaded Jdeveloper,

I have a query is, If Jdeveloper need to be installed the requirements will be.
Jdeveloper and Database thats it or anything else needed.

In the present setup* I have installed.
Weblogic
Database
RCU
JVM
Webcenter Suite.

As mentioned above this two setups are different methods or should I install Jdeveloper with the present setup?

I am confused lot with the present setup.

If the Jdeveloper and the Present setup are the to different methods then which one will be recommended in the realtime Envirolment pl guid me on this.

Thanks & Regards,
Naveen

This discussion gets a big to large for my blog :)
Create a topic on OTN: https://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=354 Explain your situation. Explain what your requirements are and I will give some nice answers over there.

Sir,

As per the about OTN discussion I have tried to install all through JDeveloper but I did successful so i request you to post some topic to install and configure Webcenter through Jdeveloper It will be helpful for beginners like me...

Thanks and Regards,
Naveen

Firstly, thanks for a great set of instructions on installing WebLogic and WebCentre. There's no way I'd have weblogic running without you.

I'm trying to get WebCentre running as we want to test CMIS requests/responce from the Oracle product.

When I run startWebLogic.cmd however it ends like so:
<Notice> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000365> <Server state changed to FAILED.>
<Error> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000383> <A critical service failed. The server will shut itself down.>
<Notice> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000365> <Server state changed to FORCE_SHUTTING_DOWN.>

In the logs the error seems to be "Error message: JPS-06514: Opening of file based keystore failed".

Any ideas? I've tried the rename cwallet.sso fix to no avail. I assume I need more info. Which file and where do I put what command to enable more verbose logging?

Thanks again

I have tried to recompile the packages and package bodies , but while recompiling it is givivng me erros " compiled with errors". How do I fix this?
